Next up in our series of speaker Q&As, we talk to Peter Borg Neal, CEO of Oakman Inns. He founded the now 25-strong pub and restaurant group in 2007, with the aim of creating modern public houses with a welcoming environment and a strong focus on customer service. Peter will be sharing his expertise on the second day of the show, in his talk ‘Leadership in Uncertain Times’, where he’ll discuss the importance of keeping your business moving forward rather than just battening down the hatches when facing headwinds.
What restaurant & pub operators do you particularly admire and why?
My industry hero has always been Alice Waters. Her commitment to great ingredients, simply but lovingly prepared; her understanding of the key basic elements of creating a hospitable environment and her commitment to sustainability have all been huge influences on my thinking.
What do you feel is the key for operators to successfully compete against their competitors in 2019 and beyond?
Focus on the important stuff: Great operational delivery; Engaging your people.
What do you see as key trends in the coming year?Â
A sustainable approach in terms of the planet, people and profits.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of your job?
Seeing people grow in terms of their skills, confidence and self-esteem.
And the most challenging?
All the things that I can’t directly influence such as Brexit, business rates and planning legislation.
What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given?
To approach challenges with a simple mantra: SEE, THINK, ACT.
